RENTAL ROUND UP TIME!!!!!!!!! Whew I’ve got a lot to catch up on! Hee Hee! Enjoy!

On 2/26/17 at 2:22PM we (my guy Dave and I, duh) rented CONTAMINATION (1980) on Blu-Ray and COUNTDOWN (1967) on DVD.

CONTAMINATION – “Let’s see what this mystery is all about?” This Italian/German horror movie starts out in New York City when a ghost ship comes to port and there’s a bloody gooey mess aboard and a lot of green egg gunk! There’s Coffee from Columbia that’s been tainted, with alien things! A cop, a government scientist and an astronaut go to Columbia to go on an adventure because; “national security is at stake!” It was gorey good, it was ridiculous, a RAT exploded, I am pretty sure for realz and GOBLIN did the music.

COUNTDOWN – Let’s race to space! Robert Altman directed this film and it stars James Caan as Mickey Stegler, the man who’s going to the moon in what could be a one way trip because we’re racing to beat the Russians! Will we make it? Mickey is getting the intense crash course and his pal Chiz, played by Robert Duvall is mighty jealous he’s not going up, but begrudgingly helps with training. It was a fun space adventure and goes to show political ‘tudes haven’t changed, people want to win and movie magic makes dreams comes true.

On 3/7/17 at 7:41PM we rented ZOOT SUIT (1981) on DVD, SMART MONEY (1931) on DVD, WAKE IN FRIGHT (1971) on Blu-Ray and MEN & CHICKEN (2015) on Blu-Ray.

SMART MONEY – Edward G. Robinson is Nick the Barber, he’s lucky, he gambles and usually wins, wins big. His pals stake him so he can go to the big city and play against a big high roller. When Nick finds himself in the big city, he gets fleeced from some local hoods. Well, Nick ain’t no dummy, he gets revenge and makes money and starts running gambling halls of his own much to the annoyance of the police. Nick’s best pal is Jack, played by James Cagney. Jack is by Nick’s side and helps to keep the racket going strong while he tries to keep Nick from falling for Blondes, which is Nick’s biggest weakness. I love me pre-code films.

MEN & CHICKEN – Oh boy! This was a weird one! Two brothers, one being Mads Mikkelsen, find out they were adopted and they venture out to seek their true father and find three more brothers. Men & Chicken, tries to unfold the mystery of man, their place in the world and how society can hold them back. How does a man leave a legacy when he can’t sire children? Oh my, well Science and or Nature finds a way. You just need a Cock to control the chicken coop. This is what I learned from MEN & CHICKEN.

WAKE IN FRIGHT – This was quite a follow up to the previous mentioned movie. Men just have a tough time when they can’t get what they want. A teacher, John Grant, played by Gary Bond, is stuck in a nowhere one train stop town of Australia and it has eaten away at his soul. He’s got a vacation and plans to head to Sydney and see his girlfriend. John gets stuck in another small outback town! UH OH! The town is filled with gambling drunkards and soon he becomes one too. John even goes hunting in the outback shooting kangaroos, which is a brutal sight to see. (The hunting footage was very sad, and they made a point of saying it was done by real licensed hunters.) Donald Pleasence is the town doctor, and full time alcoholic and he takes John on many of the weekends adventures. This was re-released on the big screen a few years back and since I missed it then I knew I’d see it eventually. As sobering as it is, I’m glad I did.

ZOOT SUIT – “An American Classic.” There was a recent production of ZOOT SUIT here in Los Angeles and Dave and I were fortunate enough to attend. This inspired me to rent and re-watch the movie which I hadn’t seen in a long long time. “Enjoy the pretense..play the myth.”

ZOOT SUIT in film form is still a relevant piece of cinema! Directed by Luis Valdez and I was excited to realize that it was Patricia Birch who did the choreography. (She directed GREASE 2!!!!!!) Based on a true incident of a gang of Chicanos who are put on trial for murder.

Henry Reyna (Daniel Valdez) is the gang leader at the center of the trail, and it doesn’t paint a pretty picture of the judicial system or our government. It’s angering even more so right now for what we’re all facing every single day! Zoot Suit says our system of justice can prevail; “no matter how slowly wheels grind.” but it sure doesn’t apologize for the error of it’s ways. People are ready to believe in hate, categorize what and who they don’t understand, let American’s kill American’s when they’re not white. ZOOT SUIT though is here to remind you to fight for your life, your race, your family, to shake up the country so they see the errors of it’s ways! #RESIST WAKE UP people, dance if you have to, just don’t let hate win!! Yup!
On 3/22/17 at 12:24PM we rented DEAD PIGEON ON BEETHOVEN STREET (1974) on DVD, BRANDED TO KILL (1967) on Blu-Ray and THE LAST SUPPER (1995) on DVD.

THE LAST SUPPER – 5 liberal friends all live together in a house and have a weekly Sunday meal, usually inviting an outsider to discuss the world and it’s politics. Oh 90’s…are you to blame? 😉 Anyways, this fun 90’s cast of characters includes Cameron Diaz, Annabeth Gish (SHAG!!!!), Jonathan Penner, Courtney B. Vance and Ron Eldard…oh and #DIRECTEDBYWOMEN Stacy Title.

As the film starts during their most recent things dinner goes over the edge when they kill a racist, evil man played by Bill Paxton. (R.I.P. Bill Paxton!) and so they fall down the rabbit hole of their moral dilemma. When you’re a liberal spouter do you take some action too? Could they do it again? Should they? The timid ones find new strength while some begin to feel their conscious creeping.

BRANDED TO KILL – A Japanese Yakuza movie that focuses on hitman #3, Goro Hanada, who finds himself on the kill list after a hit went wrong. He’s running from hitman #1, who’s tormenting him mentally rather than just taking him out the way he expects. Goro is trying to survive, trying to outsmart #1, while indulging in his fetish for white rice and women.

This movie just exudeds C-O-O-L, Cool! 1960’s Cool. It was visually beautiful and slick. Goro was a good #3 but it was a butterfly that got in his way. I really am leaning towards old stylish flicks these days and this was a great discovery.

DEAD PIGEON ON BEETHOVEN STREET – A film by Samuel Fuller and set in Germany. I’m a big fan of Samuel Fuller and this was an interesting discovery. It was actually part of a TV series in Germany but given a theatrical cut in 2015 UCLA Film and Television Archive put out the directors cut. This is what I watched on DVD.

An American agent dies on Beethoven Street with photos of a US official up to some dirty deeds with a woman. His pal, an American detective, played by Glenn Corbett, takes on the case and he joins up with the gang of drug dealers who delve into blackmail of entrapping officials with scandalous deeds.  Of course he plans to expose their plans, and it’s fun in Fuller’s style. The detective is an American in Germany and one of my favorite things is him talking in English to his German contact who replies in German, they just talk back and forth no subtitles on the German end but you know just what’s going on. It is a bit clunky along the way, but some cool stuff for sure and I loved Fuller’s little cameo off camera as his puff of cigar smoke is rising from a chair.

And our last rental was on 4/5/17;  GRAVEYARD SHIFT (1990) on DVD, NEEDFUL THINGS (1993) on DVD, HEART OF MIDNIGHT (1988) on DVD, SLEEPWALKERS (1992) on DVD, ALI FEAR EATS THE SOUL (1974) on DVD and THE DAMNED DON’T CRY (1950). Sadly we didn’t get to finish ALI FEAR EATS THE SOUL, but what I saw was quite good and a bit sad…I will have to finish it another day (I did see it was on FILMSTRUCK under their CRITERION collection!)

HEART OF MIDNIGHT – HEART OF MIDNIGHT is a very creepy, dark, moody piece that’s more than a little disturbing. There are some great visuals that lead to some great jump scares.

Jennifer Jason Leigh is Carol Rivers, she’s a survivor, recovering from a recent mental breakdown when she inherits her uncle’s night club Midnight. She heads there with plans to revamp it to her own style to fulfill a fantasy of her own, yet, she’s haunted by memories of her uncle’s past. Carol soon discovers his nightclub was more of a sex club with a series of fetish rooms. As Carol moves in an inhabits the building strange visions take over and local boys, one being a young Steve Buscemi, sexually assault her which only adds to the pain of sorting out her past and present. Peter Coyote comes in, who is intriguing from the start, trying to piece together the puzzles pieces of his own that involve the MIDNIGHT. I would love to delve more into this movie, but there’s so much that could be spoiled. As it started I really wasn’t too keen on where i thought it would go, but Jennifer is an amazing actress!! I actually read Ebert’s piece on the movie and it ended up spoiling some things, so don’t do that until after you watch the movie. And look out for Frank Stallone as a detective, a chauvinistic one at that.

Since this was a DVD, Dave and I  actually listened to some of the DVD commentary after watching the movie. It was great to learn about the director, his take on the movie from a recent viewing compared to when he made it. It really is a look at a women trying to survive in a man’s world and facing day to day exploitation. A fun factoid discovered, in the film commentary, Jennifer has a cast on her leg, when asked about it in the movie she says an Elephant stepped on her, the truth was she had a cast when filming started and the director said go with it instead of dropping her from the film. Yea movies! Yea Commentary!!

THE DAMNED DON’T CRY – Joan Crawford is a rich socialite Lorna who’s mixed up with the mob, she’s gone missing after young gangster Nick Prenta is found dead. Now it’s time for flashbacks as we discover Lorna was once Ethel, who came from a poor family. She was married to an oil worker, they had a kid and just worked to survive. When Ethel’s young son dies in an accident she leaves her husband determined to become someone, make some money and find another sort of life.

What we learn is Ethel is willing to take what she wants, and is ready to use men even as they use her too. Joan is an amazing woman and she plays this role so well. You see the tragedy that fuels her on the surface. As Ethel becomes Lorna she has a taste of living with money, and hopes to have happiness yet it is soon evident that a gangster lifestyle means just using others for more riches and love is not in the cards.
Next up is the Stephen King trilogy of DVD’s that my guy Dave was really keen on watching. I had seen two of the three, realizing I never watched all of GRAVEYARD SHIFT! I had rented the other two flicks back in the day, on VHS! So now re-sees on DVD! Woot Woot!

GRAVEYARD SHIFT – I remember catching this movie from the beginning on cable but never watch the whole thing, I must have found something else to watch because channel flipping was so much fun! Anyways, GRAVEYARD SHIFT, there’s a killer creature hiding in the bowels of a cotton factory in Maine that’s overrun by rats! David Andrews is John Hall, the latest employee to join the factory and wrangled into the basement clean up crew for double holiday pay! The things people do for money! There’s good gross out monster kills! There’s crazy rodent killer played by Brad Dourif and the cool touch chick played by Kelly Wolf. Watch this movie to learn what a slingshot and a soda pop can can do when you’re in trouble!

NEEDFUL THINGS – I had good memories of this movie when I first watched it on VHS with my dad. We dug it then and I am glad that it holds up just as good now. Dave had never seen it and dug it too! So woot! Oh and this time around I realized W.D. Richter wrote the screenplay!

Ok, let’s go to the little Maine town of Stephen King land and meet the latest tenant who has opened an antique shop, Leland Gaunt, played by Max Von Sydow. Leland has everything, especially that one thing your heart desires most, you just have to do some pranking! Leland spins the wheels to drive the town’s residents into killers. I love the twists of having one person taunt another thinking it’s someone else and so the vicious small town gossip circle spins rampant! The town though, is lucky to have newcomer Sheriff Alan Pangborn, played by Ed Harris. Will evil win? Can the human race survive it’s dance with the devil? (I’m feeling dramatic! Thanks Stephen King!)

AND last but NOT least!

SLEEPWALKERS – Oh 1992, thank you! SLEEPWALKERS are a cat like, incestuous race that need virgins! So the Mother and Son SLEEPWALKER team (Son Sleepwalker Charles played by Brain Krause and Mom Sleepwalker played by Alice Krige) are in a new town and in desperate need of that virgin goodness. From the start Charles has plans for local girl Tanya Robertson played by Mädchen Amick. There’s some cool old school effects mixed in with new computer moves (well new in 1992!) and it’s the old school bits that keep things fun. I still wonder why cat’s don’t like SLEEPWALKERS though, but maybe cause they got to be human cats and they’re still cats? Yeah, that’s my big question of the movie. I do love though how mad Mom Sleepwalker gets when those cats are around, you think she’d be better at killing ’em. Again more questions!?

Whew! Finally wrapped up a RENTAL ROUNDUP before I rented more movies! So now my guy Dave and I can go rent more movies!!!!!! See you soon Vidéothèque!! See you readers soon too with more movie stuff. Yup!

Since I have fallen behind in sharing my movie views I worry about rambling in a long posts and I was thinking of combining my rental round up with my movie tally, but let me do one post for each…

I am making a promise to myself (AGAIN!) to set a regular blog schedule. But,…then again summer is around the corner (EXCUSES, EXCUSES!) and who knows what will happen!! WHAT will tomorrow bring!?!?

Right now I am here and I this is my movie tally as I put on the finishing touches on that Rental Roundup! (The coming thing, from me!) Some of the best of my movie outings since the last time I posted a tally (GEE, FEBRUARY!), was my movie outings to celebrate my b-day back in March. Oh and fun re-see’s especially with my nieces Celia and Effie, they finally got to see BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA! “It’s all in the reflexes.”

This brings me to 124 movies in all for 2016, so yea!!!!! Here’s to Happy Movie watching times for everyone! (Yes I need to see more!)

For me, when it comes to watching movies I still think it’s nice to share what was a good movie view! So here’s some of my favorite flick picks!

If you want a further flash back I offer you a recap of some movies I saw in May which can be found here: http://shempcat.com/movie-marathon-24-hours-of-cinema/ please read and enjoy! Yup!

Now here’s 10 Films I would recommend that were new sees for me:

red sun rojoRED SUN: A western with the greats Charles Bronson, Alain Delon and Toshirô Mifune. When a train with Japanese delegates is robbed by Link (Bronson) and Gauche (Delon) there’s a double cross. Gauche takes a Japanese sword and the train loot all for himself ditching his partner Link. A Japanese Samurai guard, Kuroda (Mifune), wrangles Link into teaming up to track Gauche and this mismatched pair have quite a Western trek. I love Westerns! I love this cast! It is all pretty badass from beginning to end. The west is so much cooler now with these three fellows.

3 in atticTHREE IN THE ATTIC: This film stars Christopher Jones, whom I love because of WILD IN THE STREETS. Jones is Paxton Quigley. Paxton Quigley is in college and is known for bedding more than a few collegiate women. The tale is based on a book called Paxton Quigley’s Had the Course and they even have a song of the same title in the film. Now you’re probably wondering what’s the deal with the attic? So…Paxton finds himself entangled with three lovely ladies, all quite intriguing in their own ways. First up there’s Tobey who may just be his perfect match, next is Eulice a smart woman who’s a painter and she knows what she wants, their sexual attraction is on fire; lastly there’s hippie chick Jan who he tricked into bedding (not cool Paxton, not cool!) but they then dig their mutual hippie vibes. So Paxton goes about juggling his love life between classes and TV shows. When the ladies find out they trap him in an attic and torture him with round the clock sexual encounters. Oh Paxton, baby, you got what you gave…yup.

The-WailingTHE WAILING: This Korean horror, thriller really creeped me out and stuck with me days after I saw it. Unusual murders strike a small village and as more occur there seems to be a strange evil connection. A local policeman finds himself entangled in the gruesome horror as his daughter is soon possessed. There’s a lot going on as it’s a look at another culture dealing with possession, small town fears and prejudices. It never eases up either as things only become more horrific. I actually felt scared, jumped not because of a cheap trick and was left feeling WTF and that was all a good thing. Does everything make sense? Perhaps not but damn if my eyes weren’t glued to the screen.

BeyoneTheGates_posterBEYOND THE GATES: I ventured off to Culver City and the LA FILM FEST to see this movie. Two estranged brothers are packing up their dad’s video store after his strange disappearance and they find a VHS Board Game. Once they being to play they find the consequences have an impact on their real world and may lead them to their dad. One of my favorite actresses Barbara Crampton is the beauty of the VHS game nudging the brothers along. It’s a throw back to 80’s horror movies but feels pretty fresh. There’s blood and gore aplenty and I dug the character development between the bros. BEYOND is a fun horror movie that’s making it rounds through some festivals so keep an eye out and check it out. Yup.

demonNEON DEMON: Nicolas Winding Refn’s latest film reveals his inner 16 year old female side. (So he admitted at a Q&A I was fortunate to attend when I saw this movie.)  It’s a horror movie set in the fashion world where Jesse (Elle Fanning) is fresh on the scene and making other models jealous. Jesse has a natural beauty and she’s absolutely self aware of her power as she is ready to move on up. It’s surreal, dreamy and raw commenting on what is beauty; is it natural, is it made, can it be faked? Jena Malone is a make-up artist Ruby and she was just as entrancing throughout the film. Keanu Reeves was in this film too, and I had no idea he was until I saw his name in the credits. He’s Hank and he’s not so nice. You’ll likely love this movie or hate it. My guy Dave and I have had many a talks about how you could perceive the film and being a Refn fan I was on board through it all. Loved It.

the sniper

THE SNIPER: I found this movie sitting on my dad’s DVR recorded from TCM. It’s a sad movie that deals with some serious issues; mental health, sex crimes, the prejudice of the police force and politics which are all stuck in a broken system. Eddie Miller is a troubled man, he’s got some bad thoughts plaguing his brain. He doesn’t like women, and it seems the world is against him. When Eddie can no longer resist the urge to shoot at women from a rooftop we see just how the world reacts to such events. Society calls for justice, people choose to live in fear, a psychologist urges for support and changes to the system all while more killings continue. This film should be required viewing. It gets you angry and thinking. Things should be better by now, but from 1952 to today, this movie feels just as real now as it was then.

ResurgencePosterINDEPENDENCE DAY RESURGENCE: I won’t lie, I was excited to see this movie. I remember back in 1996 when ID4 came out…I always think about the teaser trailer, just seeing a blast of a big sky scraper. BOOM, destruction. They don’t make trailers like that anymore. What in the world were we getting into? An alien invasion?! What? Well it was 1996 and ID4 was a ridiculous movie, but it was fun and I know how to have a good old popcorn grubbin’ fun time with a movie.

I loved the build up to ID: RESURGENCE with Jeff GoldBlum as David Levinson explaining how the world has changed since that 4th of July oh so long ago. What I loved most about RESURGENCE was the idea that the world actually came together, rebuilt together and got along after such a worldwide disaster. It’s a beautiful dream and damnit I like it. So RESURGENCE is purely fluffy fun. The aliens return to try again and overtake the Earth and though we’re better prepared it’s still no easy fight!

david and jeffMy favorite things included DAVID LEVINSON, his Dad Julius, the ex president Bill Pullman, I mean President Whitmore and Dr. Brackish Okun (Brent Spiner). The movie makes the right nods for my 1996 self and it had fun action bits that kept me chuckling. Some of the action moments payoff could have used a little more oomph but I had the good old time, Yup. Oh the poor landmarks! I’m ready for more!

bloody bday kidsBLOODY BIRTHDAY: What happens when three kids are all born at the same time, under a bad astrological sign? Well they become apathetic killers at a young tender age. It’s like three bad seeds all working together to knock off people they just don’t like. This movie was it was actually filmed in my hometown and it has Julie Brown. Yea! Julie Brown, so cute and bouncy! The killer kids are pretty bad kids, don’t mess with their killing plans. The best friend of Julie Brown might know why the kids are killers but she could use a bit more smarts. She wants to be a journalist but doesn’t think she has to go off to college!? It’s a quirky horror movie and just entertaining enough. Fun 80’s cast.

tarzanTHE LEGEND OF TARZAN: I love TARZAN. I watched old Tarzan movies with my dad. I love pulpy heroes. So this movie was perfect for me! The Lord of Greystoke, aka John Clayton III, aka TARZAN (Alexander Skarsgård) has taken his place amongst Victorian England. His lovely wife Jane (Margot Robbie) is by his side. John is being wrangled to return to the African jungle to validate King Leopold’s claims on the Congo, but it’s really a ploy by the King’s envoy Leon Rom (Christoph Waltz) to get diamonds and be rid of Tarzan.

George Washington Williams, who’s actually based on a real life person and played by Samuel L. Jackson, shows up to warn Tarzan of a potential trap! George knows King Leopold is up to no good and he wants Tarzan’s help to expose the truth. Heroes one and all!

legend-of-tarzan-2Now Tarzan is set to go to the jungle and Jane is ready to return too to stay at his side. Though Jane ultimately is used as a pawn in the “let’s get Tarzan game” she’s no wispy damsel in distress. She knows her way around the jungle. This is a Tarzan movie people, it’s got action, it’s got fun, it’s got jungle heat! I learned about African bird mating calls!

There’s lots of vine swinging (oh CGI!) but, Skarsgård is a fantastic Tarzan while Robbie is his awesome Jane. (TRUE LOVE)

I admittedly am a sucker for pulpy films and I had a super duper blast! I watched this fun flick with my family and they all enjoyed it too. What more could a girl like me want? AHHHhhhhhh!!!!! TARZAN YELL

stuntsSTUNTS: I love finding movies on cable! My dad recorded this one from TCM Underground. It seemed vaguely familiar and I may have seen it before but it felt pretty new…so it’s on my new list! It stars Robert Forster as a stuntman! His brother, fellow stuntman, recently died performing a stunt and so there’s a mystery of who killed him and why!? Could it be the stunt coordinator who’s had some on set deaths hurt his career? Could it be an upcoming stuntman? Nah, that guy is a dork! (Hee hee) The cast is super cool! Ray Sharkey with a sleezy stashe and the lovely Joanna Cassidy and her adorable laugh! Both are stuntmen! This is a movie about making movies and you see the producers who want the big action to make big blockbusters. It was neat to see the old film cameras and a production in the little town of San Luis Obispo and the Madonna Inn. Robert Forster is so young and a perfect stuntman. He’s got the ‘tude and know how. He’s an awesome leading man! SPOILER WARNING!!!!!!! Things I learned from STUNTS, stuntmen ride motorcycles, if they die you have to throw their bike into the ocean. They like vans or trucks that fit waterbeds. And they’re all FAST & FURIOUS. 😉

The Hell With Dialogue, Let’s Wreck Something!

Next up, a quick run through of some favorite recent re-sees.

5 re-sees:

romancing_the_stoneROMANCING THE STONE: Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner together! Turner is romance writer Joan Wilder, she’s off to the jungle to find her sister. Joan meets hero Jack T. Colton (Douglas) in the jungle and many hijinks ensue. Joan finds her hero but realizes she can take care of herself too. What’s not to love and laugh about when you find drug runners who read romance novels and Danny DeVito is hot on their trails? ROMANCING is still as funny as it was when I watched it on cable and VHS! We had a blast kicking off the summer vibe watching this at our friends house outside in the backyard! Yeah movies outdoors!

WILD IN THE STREETS: Christopher Jones is Max Frost and he wants to change America. He gets the voting age dropped to 14, gets a hippie elected into the house of representatives, becomes President of the United States and puts everyone over the age of 30 into LSD camps, it’s the “SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME”, you dig it baby? Thanks to TCM for airing this one! It was playing and I watched from beginning to end. Bonus cheers to Shelley Winters, Richard Pryor and Hal Holbrook for being groovy peeps in this movie.

Let The Revolution Begin!

CAST A DEADLY SPELL: An HBO TV movie that I watched back in the day and have to say that it still holds up pretty well now. I found it Amazon Instant and just settled in for a re-watch. Set in 1940’s Los Angeles where magic is used willy nilly, we meet detective Harry Lovecraft (Fred Ward) who doesn’t use the stuff. He stays on the straight and narrow and gets caught up in stopping an end of the world plot. The film has a cool cast and I have to highlight Clancy Brown! There’s cool monsters and gorey effects. It’s a fun magic noir world. Would you use magic?

GOT MAGIC?

GOT MAGIC?

THE PHANTOM: “For those who came in late…” Ok we’re back to pulpy heroes and this movie was one of my favorites in 1996 and still one of my tops all in all. Oh how I love Billy Zane! My niece Effie was over and I actually got her to watch this movie with me! She dug it, of course she had tons of questions but enjoyed the guy in the purple suit, swinging through the jungle and the city to keep the world safe from evil tycoons! I really wish THE PHANTOM series continued. Le Sigh. I still have that Phantom milk poster on a bedroom wall! (I’ll never grow up!)

tarzanlambertGREYSTOKE: THE LEGEND OF TARZAN, LORD OF THE APES: Being on a Tarzan kick after THE LEGEND OF TARZAN my dad found this article online: The Secrets Behind That Other Tarzan Movie — The One That Earned a Dog a Screenwriting Oscar Nomination  and if you have a moment it is a great article to read. And then like me you can go and watch GREYSTOKE: THE LEGEND OF TARZAN, LORD OF THE APES.

I actually watched GREYSTOKE back in my cable TV watching days as a kid. It probably started my love of Christopher Lambert! So, this is a TARZAN origin story! It starts with a musical Overture! What was most shocking to remember was the very start, the apes fighting and the mama gorilla (Tarzan’s mama to be) lost her little baby! That baby death was like WOAH! Then we travel to England and meet the Lord of Greystoke, John Clayton II (Paul Geoffrey who’s also Perceval in Excalibur!!). He is about to go off and away with his wife and on their journey. Then they are shipwrecked and trying to survive the wilds of the jungles in Africa. Though they have a lovely treehouse it’s not meant to be because jungle life is too harsh and those apes aren’t so nice.

Baby John, Tarzan, is then adopted by the apes, and lives among them, swinging from trees, growing strong and becoming a superb mimic. Tarzan develops more of a roar then that traditional yell.

Ian Holm shows up as an explorer, Capitaine Phillippe D’Arnot, and he is saved by Tarzan when the rest of his party is killed by a local tribe. In this version it’s Phillippe who does the teaching to help Tarzan realize he’s more than just an APE. Phillippe and John are soon in England and grandpa Lord of Greystoke couldn’t be happier to have his Clayton home.

I seriously could go on and on about this movie! It’s beautiful, the actors in the ape suits are grand, the music fits perfectly. I loved seeing England and Tarzan amongst the fancy folks. Even pretty Andie MacDowell was a nice Jane but did you know she was dubbed over by Glen Close? So it goes in the movie biz! Yup. It was a great re-watch. Yeah, TARZAN!!!! Oh and if you Lambert fans might be wondering about that laugh, yea, he laughs! It made me squeeee!

And there you have it, my take on some movies, my recommendations and some rambling fun. I hope you go out and watch more movies and I will too! Let’s all find the fun in movies and share that fun. Yup!

cat fangirlAnother year has come and gone, WOOOOSH! It was quite a ride. Yup!

I have been married over a year, WOOT! I had a new job at a start-up which was stressful and I am no longer there. (whew!) Now, I don’t usually get to into my personal affairs as I’d really rather just focus on the things that make me happy and share that happy. So I’ll try not to ramble off topic. 🙂 We’re talking about movies here!!!!

Everyone has complaints, anxiety, craziness and I have my fill, but through it all I turn to movies to leave that stuff behind. I just love, love, love watching movies! Yup!

Though I did not watch as many movies as usual throughout my year, (le sigh) I did still watch a lot and even basked before the big silver screen. (My Happy Place!)

I am indeed thankful that I have had some fantastic film discoveries through it all!

As a DARKMAN fangirl, of course I have to say, one of my big re-see highlights of 2015 involves my most favorite director and favorite movie DARKMAN. WOOT WOOT! Remember my DARKMAN DAY!?!

And now without further ado, here is my list of NEW MOVIES (seen for the first time) and my list of RE-SEE MOVIES (those films I can watch again and again and again).

Wow! Lots of movies! Lots of happy times! Once again 303 of them in all!

  • I watched DARKMAN 3 times, twice was in a theater!

  • I had a fun time re-watching THREE AMIGOS for my niece’s birthday showing it to her friends with a backyard screening.
  • My Guy Dave got to see one of his all time favorites on his Birthday, on a big screen! HACKERS!

  • I got to show my nieces MONSTER SQUAD!!! They loved it! Maybe I can start expanding their horror movie viewing soon too. 😉

  • I also found BILL & COO on Amazon Instant and also showed it to my nieces and followed it up with PAULIE. That was a fun for the birds viewing.

  • In October, I introduced Dave’s younger brother to ROCKULA, (on VHS) and it was enjoyed!
  • My dad and I had the most fun watching RUSTLERS’ RHAPSODY at the New Beverly at midnight. We got to meet G.W Bailey and chat with him, geeking out as we do. That movie is a Horlick favorite and it was a moral imperative for us to be at that screening.

Here’s to more movie watching in 2015! I’m off to a good start and am on my third flick! It’s nice to have a day off to just watch movies at home! YUP YUP YUP! Let’s all keep watching movies.
